1992 A Native Vision was the result of a grant from the Canadian Native Arts Foundation to work on my film When Wires Cross which eventually became 7 Fires 4 U Kitchi Manitou, an experimental narrative that came out of the Oka crisis of 1990. it was a difficult film to get done, I was told it was too political at various times, told it would just increase the politics heat at the time. John Kim Bell gave me a bit of money to research so I ended up going to Oka after my work with the Karen Jamieson dance company. They went to Fredericton and I went to Quebec to research all the aspects of the Oka crisis less than two years before the July 11th. standoff so this is the result of that early research, a research video plus sharing a bit about myself in understanding my past and and all that resulted from those early years
I recorded this off Youtube, bypacked images like the days of Stan Brakhage, who Canadian filmmakers late David Rimmer, the living extraordinaire AL Razutis, Both my teachers Another early filmmaker in my 8mm, 16mm days, was American filmmaker Jim McBride, who would take a picture of every Camera Angle , I think of what was shown on TV. So long ago, He is in his early 80s now, but I liked his work, and did the same thing back in 83, or 84 with a Bolex 16mm spring camera. The film is lost in time, some images I found on video, but over exposed film , limited video technology, learning years. Sorry about that folks . "Marat/Sade" is a two-act play written by German-Swedish author Peter Weiss, first performed in 1964. Set in the Charenton asylum in 1808, the play portrays an imaginative reenactment of the assassination of revolutionary leader Jean-Paul Marat by Charlotte Corday, occurring exactly fifteen years after the event.
As young instructors back then, we were not sure of why the Director wanted this play, for young indigenous students. But now in hindsight, I often thought, was it because of the residential school repercussions on the indigenous families at times , inter-generational trauma, and all that was part of the tragic results of Canada's Failed Assimilation polices
Good day all, I had the honetech capturing software for some time now, but when I updated to Honetech 7, the green demarcation appeared as I told many early in later captures of footage. Well, in order to get RIO ISLAND up for Warren Arcand, I wanted to resolve that demarcation issue, so off I went to Google land ha ha. But I did find A copy of Honetech 5 on an Archival site online. SO I Was able to download it , install it on my HP and the demarcation is gone. I thank the lord for that :-) So now capturing footage for a potential redo of a show, and other works.
So here we raise our hands up to old technology. As we were able to record this show from 1988, when I was a SFU student. Great talent here. I am working now on the following show Sea Street, which was re-written into a larger cast play for this summer program.
Sea Street was commissioned by the Surrey Teachers Association when they contacted me about doing a show on Native issues. It was 1985, I just did a strong role in The Young Poundmaker by playwright Ernie Carefoot for Hub Theatre in Saskatoon. I read for the part in a lady Director's house in East Van, got the part, they flew me to Saskatoon, where we rehearsed for eight days to be ready for a week run of a new play. It star Gordon Tootoosis, Tantoo Cardinal, myself, Carol Greyeyes, Patriarch Victor ThunderChild, ( who Met Diefenbaker,) and other talented actors. I was unsure of my ability to do such a play, but it did not stop me, A young university student, I wrote and performed it as a one man show , directed by Colin MacPherson.. It was remounted again in 1987 for The Indigenous World Conference as a two person show with actually Tracy McCollister, I believe, who was amazing. Again Colin MacPherson directed this work. Then creating a similar Desktop Video Edit of this show early 1992 when I had that genlock and Amiga Commodore system, Yet, I taped over the beginning of the show for another Performance Stream which was an early beginning of NDNs & DOGs, but Stopped at at 20 minutes before I realized I was taping over that work. Yet it is through your hands that all comes together. To export 20 minutes of what I did yesterday, and to find that original VHS edit the day before was not coincidence.
There it was as I check out that damaged edit....I push play on the VHS deck, I stopped the accidental recording just before twenty minutes. And there was the theatre edit of the documentation footage edited with the colour footage of the performance piece. So thank you Father for Al Razutis for being the excellent experimental filmmaker who taught me, Thank you for the late Kenny Bishoff , who introduced me to Emile Daley who painted the acrylic painting of the blond head avec heart and Indian head, I copied over the killing of the two witnesses, as the false Jesus was painted tainted by the minions of The Devil. The Archetype couple WOMAN I & WOMAN II continue life in the passive active space of flesh in God's time. This is a stream honoring my dear son Dorian, who shot these out takes for his student school project and his grandmother, my mother, the late James Nicholas, and of course his associated student playing the explorer and Mark Prior who helped me much in the 1994s after Dorian's tragic accident January 1994. Hospitalized, she passed November 2015. Rest in Peace Danielle, you raised an exceptional son. Nevertheless Mark acted in Dorian's stream, Shot at MOA Vancouver. AS Is footage. I have know Deborah since 1983, and with the Carnegie Theatre Guild , spent many nights with her and friends doing theatre, improvs as we shared lives and friends in and around the DTES. Good morning Holy Father Jesus son of man. you give me so much to think about today thank you for today, how it is written in proverbs 16:3 commit our works to you father and our thoughts will be established. I am thinking that as I start my day today in the works that I need to do, I commit them to you father so that my thinking maybe sound and good. To be successful in my work that needs to be done, you have given me perhaps, I think about Israel, I think about Zionism, Theodore Hersl, the founder of Zionism back in the 1800s and what he had to go through in dealing with understanding the old prophecies of the old and new Testaments. Jeremiah 16: 15 Isaiah 34:8, Ezekiel 11:19. So much to think about father, when you think about how the world now sees Israel and what's happening with Palestine and Gaza as we go back to the Stone Age the time prior to the copper age and the former Antediluvian world prior to the flood and how all those great civilizations and knowledge was there but it was corrupted by the Nephilim, created from the time the angels saw how beautiful the women were, the corruption, the giants combination of spirit and flesh into the corporal body without soul, without the love and grace of the Holy Father. So complex I think about the shows last night I watched dealing with great civilizations come and gone prior to the flood then after the flood all that came to be the leading of Abraham out from his homeland to Canon, the promised land, the centuries, the millenniums that have occurred after that. Life with such issues created by pride, man, humans misinterpreting sacred words, humanity have a sense of loss in dealing with the Old Testament, the New Testament, Judaism and Christianity and Islam. All values coming from one man, in the sense of understanding the Abrahamic religions, if there is in one sense, so much convoluted bias thinking from man because of what? The days of Babel, the tower of Babel, then all one language, we being split u, p so complex because man want to be equal with God. But we're just flesh, so insignificant in that part but through Jesus your son faith we have become of some value. And I thank you for that father, a great value through love and grace. So much to think about, so thank you for the writings of Glen Andersen today, he made me think about all these notions, which I researched today because he was writing about how Israel was always winning their wars since 1948 and now today he has his different view and I'm sadden by that because, of how the world turns against Israel as that is part of your prophecies. And perhaps may are justified due to the horrific actions of current leader and government of the people. And some feel such ways due to Israel rejecting Jesus, but as it is written, they will realize their errors in the latter end time prophecies. But I still saddens me , as even though the world turns away from Israel, they will all be conquered in their ways.. And with Glen, I really liked him back at SFU, a very interesting character, so help him find his way back to your holy words Holy Father Amen.
Wow we made it to Friday. I have done not much outside of creating some streams of words, working on ideas, cleaning up, but letting it go because I'm just watching TV or fell asleep on the couch. But life is a blessing and every day is a blessing and I'm so thankful for this week. Happy Father's Day Son. I am so proud of you. Always place our Father in Heaven first in your life and he will provide all your needs for you and your family. Get baptized, I am sorry I was not so aware in my youth, the sinner I am, but Jesus came to me and I am thankful. So that is the best I can do for this Father's; day by acknowledging our Father in Heaven and to share to you your responsibilities with free will. And I hope you know , your mom and dad loved you very much in our younger days, and even though we now occupy the physical world and the spirit world, we will always love you Dorian. Bypacking is a term relative to Stan Brakage's film techniques of his time. Al Razutis or his late Colleague David Rimmer, two of my film professors elaborated on that in former classes. Now a days, the masses are so lazy now, they just google it. lol Excerpts of the song Monsieur Cote is in the background too. I wrote that song during the filming of Windigo in Quebec 1993. Monsieur Cote represented the Federal Government in the 35mm film.
